The word Feng Shui literally means Wind-Water and is used to create balance and harmony in living and workspaces. It is believed that there are many benefits and advantages if you apply Feng Shui to your home. In terms of career, love, prosperity, and health, having the Feng Shui set up correctly can make a significant difference to these areas of your life.

Of late we have seen an increase in Feng Shui masters being asked to advise people who are in the process of acquiring property as well as those who have already acquired property. When it comes to buying a property or building a new one, there are a few main factors to consider which play an important role in creating good Feng Shui from the beginning of the process. Location, direction, external environment and overall shape need to be considered.

The direction decides the orientation of a house. The best house direction for good Feng Shui is south-facing, great for light and Qi absorption, creating family harmony. A poor orientation is believed to affect the family’s health and can lead to illness.

If you have a good location this is great Qi. It is considered bad Qi to have a house be built on a ridge, at a valley gateway, on the Cliffside, at a river outlet, next to an overbridge or highway, in a cul-de-sac, or at a T junction. These are considered accident-prone areas and should be avoided. In Feng Shui, it is believed that any of these could be at the forefront for any natural disasters that may occur down the line.

The Feng Shui of the external environment directly determines the Qi absorption on an internal level.  To have a house leaning against something or behind it creates a good aura field.  Behind and in front should be open and bright which also creates a good aura filed. The best situation is to have it leaning against a building or peak. Qi absorption is best when there is no building blocking the house. Avoid surroundings and nearby areas where there are hospitals, temples or graveyards, lamp poles, and wire poles.  You should avoid having these in front of your gate, or wealth and health could be affected.

The shape is of great importance and houses should be square, regular, symmetrical as well as flat. It is not advised to have your house triangular or of irregular shape as this may cause mental tension.  In traditional Chinese Feng Shui, odd shapes could lead to disharmony and create unnecessary problems with people and things. So the regular house shape is very important in terms of good Feng Shui.

Home office or Study

Perhaps you are interested in opening up your own business. It is suggested that you should pay attention to where your desk or table is set up in your home and where it is positioned. It is well- known fact that a table is a piece of furniture often used in our work, so its layout Feng Shui is very important to us, especially to when it comes to luck. Selecting the appropriate table, putting it in the right direction and placing proper items on it are all fastidious. It is recommended that a comfortable table is selected with height, color, and style in mind. A table should not be placed between two walls or with the right side facing the door.

Kitchen

The kitchen area is very important because of the yin yang and its relationship between fire and water. Using Feng Shui correctly in this area of the home will bring you good luck with money. Use of bright light is very important, this is because the kitchen's energy can be chaotic during meal preparations and this increases the chances of accidents happening. Adequate lighting is an essential part of Feng Shui. It is advised when choosing a property or designing a home you locate your kitchen east, southeast, and northwest or northeast.

Living room

The living room bears great importance as this area is associated with wealth, health, peace and happiness. When entering the home, the first area you should see is your living room. It’s not a good idea to have this located behind a bedroom or kitchen. This would be considered bad Feng Shui and could lead to mistakes in your professional life. Try to have this located in the center of your home. The shape is also of great importance and should be either square or rectangular. This will help improve luck and create a positive energy flow. Pay close attention to the layout of the furniture and be sure to have the sofa away from the door to not place this with its back to the door. It is not advised to place any mirrors above the sofa either. Rather have a painting with pictures of flowers, birds, horses or other peaceful animals, nothing to beast-like though. Use circular-shaped decorations as this is an area in need or harmonious energy. Floors should also be even.

Bedrooms

The bedroom is an environment that should receive the same attention as all the rooms in a household when applying Feng Shui. As we know the bedroom needs to be the place in or home where peace and relaxation are necessary in order to have a good night’s sleep. It is so important to restore our energies and therefore we must keep the negative energy away. The flow of good chi through the environment is important so people have peaceful sleep.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms do have a bad reputation in feng shui, this is a fact. You can change this reputation, though. The bathroom should not be visible when entering the house. The bathroom door should not directly face the entrance door. This is considered unsightly and contrary to the Feng Shui theory. According to the Feng Shui theory, this kind of layout could lead to diseases and also bring about bad luck within the immediate family. It is advised to place a screen between the entrance door and the bathroom. The bathroom door should not face the bedroom directly, this can harm your health, especially for women. The solution is to use green plants to block out. They don’t advise having a bathroom that faces the bed either.

Front Door

To bring about good fortune and luck it is wise to have the area outside the front door flat and open, as this is where luck and fortune begin. Avoid having your front door open up to a staircase as soon as you enter, it is believed that luck and wealth energy will flow downwards and affect a person’s earning power. The colors should also match the owner’s favorite element. Avoid having arch-shaped doors, this can confuse the energy and trick the energy flow if it looks anything like a tombstone. Make sure the door is solid and not hollow. Size is very important too as it affects the Qi. Do not have your front door and the back door in line with each other as the cross-ventilation causes wealth to come in the back door and fly out the back door.
